Donna and I went to DC last weekend for the 1st Annual Green Festival. It was amazing to see many like minded individuals, companies and speakers. I also ejoyed sampling the different foods they offered too. I must say it was the first time I was at a conference and the only food selection was vegetarian. We were both very impressed and learned a lot of new information and many new resources to draw upon for our various ezines.

Healthy diet, lifestyle pay dividends well for seniors: study

Seniors who want the longest innings possible should take the experts’ health advice to heart and keep working out and eating right into their 70s and 80s, a study said.

That was the conclusion of researchers who found that elderly Europeans who combined a heart-healthy Mediterranean diet with a healthy lifestyle had half the mortality rate of seniors who didn’t.

In fact the death rate was up to 65 percent lower among 70 and 80-year-olds who ate a diet rich in plant foods and fish, exercised every day, abstained from smoking and drank alcohol in moderation, than their less motivated peers in an analysis of two long-term studies.

“The more healthful dietary and lifestyle factors a participant had, the lower the risk for all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality,” the researchers wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association

How much TV should I allow my 4-year-old to watch?

TV can be a great source of learning and entertainment. However, studies have shown that too much TV makes children more likely to be obese – and, depending on the content, more aggressive. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests that children not be allowed to watch more than 1 to 2 hours of TV per day, and that the shows they watch be nonviolent and educational. Above all, TV shouldn’t be a substitute for activities like playing with friends, reading, or exercising.

Dhea Could Protect Against Onset Of Heart Disease

Supplements of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) could help prevent age-related heart disease, according to Japanese researchers writing in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

A low dose of DHEA, taken daily by a group of middle-aged men, improved vascular endothelial function, or artery flexibility, as well as insulin sensitivity. “These beneficial changes have the potential to attenuate the development of age-related disorders such as cardiovascular disease,” the researchers wrote.

The team from Kumamoto University School of Medicine examined the effects a daily dose of 25 mg of DHEA had on endothelial function, insulin sensitivity, and fibrinolytic activity in 24 men with raised cholesterol, average age 54. Treatment with DHEA improved endothelial function after only four weeks, the researchers said. They also noted asignificant drop in blood sugar levels without altering insulin levels.

Apple Nut Muffins

Makes 6 large muffins

Dairy-free, eggless and sugar-free

Dry Ingredients:
* 13/4 cups organic whole wheat flour
* 1/2 cup organic wheat bran
* 1 TB baking powder (aluminum-free)
* 1/2 tsp sea salt
* 1/2 cup organic walnuts, chopped
* 1/2 cup organic raisins
* 1/2 cup organic fresh apple, diced
Liquid Ingredients:
* 3/4 cup water
* 1 cup organic apple juice
* 3 TB organic canola oil
Optional Toppings:
* organic raw or roasted almond butter
* organic apple butter or applesauce

Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly oil a 6-muffin tin.

Mix first 4 dry ingredients. Add walnuts, raisins and apple and stir well. Mix liquid ingredients. (Adjust proportion of water to juice to increase or decrease sweetness.) Combine dry and liquid ingredients stirring just enough to thoroughly blend batter. Add more bran if consistency is too thin. Scoop into muffin tin.

Bake for 18 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to sit in the tin for a few minutes before removing.

Slice in half and spread with almond butter. Top with applesauce or apple butter.
