A NOTE FROM RANDAL

Hello Everyone,

I will soon be able to enjoy my favorite fruit, peaches. I guess I could eat several at one time and not bat an eye. Peaches come in all varieties and I enjoy the “free stones.” I have had some peaches already this year and they were somewhat sweet. However, they were imported in. Seems like the more “home grown” the sweeter they happen to be. Anyway, I am sure ready to put it to the test. 🙂

Here in Virginia we are starting to see signs they are now available. In fact, this weekend we plan to drive to the top of a mountain where the orchard is located. It takes about 10 minutes to get up the mountain. The roads aren’t really that good which makes you have to slow down more than you would probably do if the roads were in good shape.

It’s hard to believe it’s almost August. Where did the year go and certainly the summer? The last few months have been taken up with the project of designing a new house. We finally found some land that meets our needs. Before we had looked and looked and never found anything, if we did find something it seemed like they wanted 3 prices for it.

We close on the land in August and the builder will start in October. Needless to say, we have been busy putting all those details together, primarily Donna. If you have been following our ezine since we left Alabama you know that where we are now is merely a stopping off place. We left Alabama wanting to get some land and build a home. We just didn’t know where so we bought this house with resale in mind.

That’s about it for now. If your favorite fruit is peaches hope you enjoy them as much as I am going to.

Until next time,

Randal

FENUGREEK FOR FRESHNESS by Rebecca Skloot Popular Science July 2002

Kavita Shukla of Ellicot City, Maryland, may be just 16, but she’s been
inventing stuff for years. In fourth grade, she came up with an egg slicer
(decorated with a plastic chicken) that was activated by a marble. At 13,
after her mother lost three gas caps from her car, Shukla rigged up a
temperature-sensitive system that signaled when the cap was off. But her
best invention so far˜for which she recently received a Lemelson-MIT High
School Invention Apprenticeship˜was inspired while visiting her grandmother
in Bhopal, India, where tap water teems with bacteria. One day, after Shukla
swallowed some water while brushing her teeth, her grandmother gave her
fenugreek˜an herb long used in Indian cooking and medicine. Shukla didn’t
get sick and she began to wonder whether the herb could really protect
against bacteria. Soon, the Shukla family’s refrigerator was full of
berries, some rotting, others remaining remarkably fresh. Now, after two
years of experiments, Shukla has shown that paper treated with fenugreek
does indeed preserve fruits and vegetables for weeks. No one knows the why
or how of fenugreek’s preservative properties, but the apprenticeship should
help her find out. It will allow her to continue her research in a
well-stocked lab under the guidance of a professional scientist.

Shukla , meanwhile, has finished high school while taking college courses at
night, playing the violin, going to parties, and organizing a volunteer
water-quality project. She’s still trying to find time to learn to drive. –

DIABETES DRUG: GLUCOPHAGE Submitted by Robin Snelgrove

Metformin, sold as Glucophage, can cause a rare side effect called lactic
acidosis, a buildup of lactic acid in the blood that is fatal in about 50
percent of cases. Patients with heart disease or kidney failure are
especially prone.

Glucophage is among the most common drugs for Type II diabetes, which is
linked to obesity and is sometimes called adult-onset, although it has
started showing up in children.

Recent research from Harvard Medical School and Public Citizen Health
Research Group suggested doctors don’t pay close enough attention to drug
warning labels, a problem also raised by the Food and Drug Administration..”

Here are some links for more info on Glucophage:

Space limitations will limit me to only one co-factor for calcium. In the
following issues I will continue this series.

Regarding calcium, it is a known fact that as we age (after age 35-40) our
ability to produce HCL (hydrochloric acid) diminishes. In order for us to
assimilate calcium properly we have to have sufficient hydrochloric acid in
our stomach. Many folks have said to me I take calcium but I can’t tell its
helping me any. Remembering last issue’s article, we must first ask is the
quality good? If so, then we have to look at our hydrochloric acid
production. If this is low or insufficient we will need to supplement with
hydrochloric acid capsules or tablets to properly utilize the calcium you
are taking.

What are the symptoms of poor hydrochloric acid production. The most
obvious is related to the digestive system. Do you have any of the
following belching, feeling full, bloating and/or gas? Do you have a problem
with constipation? Hungry for protein, loosing hair and/or poor finger
nails. If you answer “yes” to any of the above symptoms then you might
consider supplementing with hydrochloric acid capsules. I have taken 1
hydrochloric acid capsule at bedtime with my calcium for over 15 years. If
you want to read more about the product I use check out
