The Herbs Place News – 7/15/00 – The Herbs Place

COMMON HERBAL QUESTION:

What about tea bags? Are they potent enough to help and are they safe?

OUR ANSWER:

The main content to this answer would be a quality control issue and for
info on that you can read https://theherbsplace.com/quality.html

At the retail store, many people would come in wanting a "tea" for their
health problems, but didn’t find that they "really worked." This is what we
would suggest:

Buying the capsules (100 to a bottle) is much less expensive than buying a
box of tea with 20 or 24 tea bags. Most teas are designed to be used as a
beverage and don’t have the potency or even the right parts of the plant
that you want for medicinal uses. By opening a capsule and putting it in a
mug and adding hot water, you have the tea you want, and the benefits you’re
looking for. If you tap the cup as the tea brews, the powder will fall to
the bottom of the mug and you will have a nice potent and least expensive
cup of tea. Do a cost comparison and don’t forget to add the side-benefits
of safety and potency that Nature’s Sunshine always guarantees.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS: THE HEALING FATS
–Edelson Center for Environmental and Preventive Medicine

Many people who are concerned about their weight have a one-sided view of
fat. It’s important to remember that some fats are absolutely essential for
health. These essential fatty acids (EFAs) cannot be made by the body; they
must be provided through food or supplements.

EFAs work at the cellular level, helping to regulate the cell’s
moment-by-moment use of oxygen, production of energy, and transport of
electrons. EFAs are precursors to prostaglandins, hormone-like substances
that control blood pressure, platelet stickiness and kidney functions. EFAs
are also precursors to DHA, needed by organs including the brain, retina,
adrenals and testes. EFAs also help to: generate the electrical current to
keep our hearts beating correctly; transport cholesterol; form hemoglobin;
support the immune system; prevent allergies from developing, and more.

The two most essential of these fats are called omega-3 and omega-6. Omega-3
(alpha-linolenic acid) is found abundantly in flax and hemp seeds, and can
be derived from black currant seed oil, cold-water fish oils and northern
ocean algae. Omega-6 (linoleic acid) is abundant in evening primrose oil,
polyunsaturated safflower, sunflower, and corn oils.

COLD SORES & FEVER BLISTERS

"Cold sores/fever blisters are manifested by the Herpes Simplex virus. Stay
away from chocolate and especially peanuts because of the Aflatoxin mold
factors and the fact the peanuts can harbor the Herpes virus. You can
literally o.d. on chocolate (what a gyp, huh?) and I actually caused myself
Herpes Zoster because of this. I used VS-C and stayed away from citric acid
fruits. Also, stress can re-activate the condition very easily as well as
long sun exposure." Lisa

BAKED FRENCH FRIES

Recipe By: Vegetarian Times Magazine, February 1998, page 58
Serving Size: 4

2 medium baking potatoes, scrubbed (leave peels on if preferred)
2 teaspoons melted butter or olive oil
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper — to taste

Better than fast-food fries, this healthy homemade version has lots of
flavor with a minimum of fat. As a welcome bonus, the skins can be left on
the potatoes for extra crispness. Using a sharp knife, cut potatoes
lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, then cut slices into fry-shaped
sticks.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Pour melted butter or oil into medium bowl. Add potato sticks and toss to
coat. Spread on baking sheet. Bake 20 minutes, then turn potatoes and bake
until crisp, about 30 minutes. While still warm, season with salt and
pepper and serve.

VARIATIONS:

Sweet Potato Fries: Substitute sweet potatoes for the baking potatoes.

Spicy French Fries: Stir 1/4 teaspoon each cayenne pepper and chili powder
into butter or oil before tossing with potatoes.

Laughter is Good Medicine!

FUNNY/INTERESTING FACTS:

The venom in a Daddy Longlegs spider is more poisonous than a Black Widow’s
or a Brown Recluse, but they cannot bite humans because their jaws won’t
open wide enough.

On average, people fear spiders more than they do death.

Did you know that you are more likely to be killed by a champagne cork than
by a spider bite?

Only one person in two billion will live to be 116 or older.
