A NOTE FROM RANDAL

Hi Subscribers and Members!

This is Donna! I’ve missed getting to “visit” with you since Randal took
over the newsletter, but I thought I’d share a bit of the excitement I’ve
been having as I work on this new home building project.

I’ve finally finished the design of our home. It will still have to pass
approval of the builder later this month. If you’d like to take a peak,
it’s on the website for our family [and of course friends] here:
https://theherbsplace.com/heritagemainfloor.html

After hundreds of hours spent on that project, I will be very happy to know
it is complete…….On to one of the next 132 tasks on my list! In our
minds this is the last home we will live in and we will pass it on to our
son and grandchildren [assuming there will be some]. We are wanting to
build this home with the most environmentally-friendly products as possible,
and the most healthy for our own indoor living air quality. I feel I’ve
already researched through a lifetime of articles and information. Being
online sometimes gives you more options than your brain can handle.

Since the permit to build requires you designate the type of flooring that
will be used I’ve been scrambling to decide what to do since carpeting is
out. My brain doesn’t compute on what to put down if you don’t use
carpeting, so my current task is to get that decision made. In case you’re
about to remodel or about to build also, maybe you’d like to know more about
carpeting from this article

Cool weather is coming and everybody will feel better being able to open up
their doors and windows. I love fresh air! If you don’t live where you can
get fresh air, dream on! Imagine a place in the country/woods/mountains and
make it come true! That’s what we did — and here we are in Virginia
building a home in the woods near the Blue Ridge Mountains. It took quite a
few years, but I’m one who believes that if you believe in something long
enough, it will happen!

Blessings to all!

Donna

HERBAL REMEDY MAY BE EFFECTIVE AGAINST CANCER
Wed Sep 18, 1:24 PM ET
Health – Reuters

By Charnicia E. Huggins

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The roots and leaves of the Petiveria alliacea L. plant–long used as an herbal remedy for various medical conditions–may also have some anticancer properties, recent study findings suggest.

“Nature often creates molecules unlike any that most scientists would ever imagine, and these, particularly when they are shown to be efficacious, can provide important clues regarding how to combat a particular disease,” Dr. Rabi Ann Musah of the State University of New York at Albany told Reuters Health.

“The discovery of novel molecules in plants that have the ability to destroy or inactivate disease-causing microbes can often serve as templates for the creation of more potent and perhaps less toxic drugs,” she added.

Native to the Amazon Rainforest, the Petiveria alliacea L. plant–commonly known as anamu–has been used extensively in South America both alone and in combination with other herbs to treat gastrointestinal inflammation, bacterial infections and some gastrointestinal and oral cancers, according to Musah.

She and her colleagues conducted the current study to determine if there was any scientific evidence to back up the plant’s purported healing effects.

They found that of the 20 compounds present in the plant–several of which had never been identified in nature before–three were similar to compounds identified in garlic, a plant known to have certain medicinal properties. In fact, the anamu plant itself has an odor that is “very similar but different” to garlic, Musah said.

Further, laboratory experiments show that certain compounds in the anamu plant were able to differentiate between normal stomach cells and cancer cells, killing only cancerous stomach cells.

The next phase of Musah’s research will be to investigate the plant’s cardiovascular effects, she said. Since some of the molecules identified in garlic are known to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, it is suspected that their counterparts in the Petiveria alliacea L. plant may have the same effect.

The study findings were presented in Boston during the recent annual meeting of the American Chemical Society.

ANTIMICROBIALS IN SOAPS, LOTIONS DON’T HELP: AMA

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Consumer products such as soaps and lotions often contain germ-killing antimicrobials, but there is scant evidence they are helpful in preventing infections, according to an American Medical Association (AMA) committee.

What’s more, they may actually be harmful in terms of promoting bacterial resistance to germ-killers, according to a report from the AMA’s Council on Scientific Affairs published in the August issue of the journal Archives of Dermatology

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TAKE CALCIUM?

Many years back we had the privilege of attending Nature’s Sunshine’s Annual
Convention in Long Beach, California. Our featured speaker was Dr. Lendon
Smith M.D. He gave a fascinating talk and he emphasized that calcium is
best absorbed when we are the least active. For most of us that is bedtime.
Since then, I have taken my calcium near bed time or at bed time.

If your health practitioner has suggested another time, then please follow
their advice they have a better idea of your health requirements than I do.

PHOBIAS

Everybody has them. Fear of flying, fear of heights, mice, snakes, germs,

list is! Here’s a site that lists hundreds of phobias. [Don’t be afraid to

LAUGHING LINES

SHOPKEEPERS COMPETITION

The shopkeeper was dismayed when a brand new business much like his own
opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read BEST DEALS.

He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and
announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading LOWEST PRICES.

The shopkeeper was panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign
of all over his own shop-it read…

MAIN ENTRANCE.
