Is Our Wired World Worsening The Wealth of Our Health?

The typical home or office has wires running everywhere. Lines for our phones, cables for our televisions, connections for our computers, and circuits for our electricity. All this wiring creates a lot of electromagnetic radiation and some people are saying that these electromagnetic fields are making them ill. So many people are making claims that the British government has decided to see whether there’s any truth to reports of electricity sickness, a possible new illness unique to the modern world.

The illness is called electromagnetic hypersensitivity, and it’s already recognized by the country of Sweden, where health officials believe just over 3% of its population suffers from it. Now British researchers are powering up their own effort to investigate the condition.

Much in the way Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) triggers symptoms in susceptible individuals when they’re exposed to minute amounts of chemicals, many believe that exposure to the electromagnetic fields generated by electrical current causes fatigue, severe headaches, and skin disorders, the typical symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), in a certain percentage of the population. Others claim that the disease is all in its victims’ minds and that no such condition actually exists.

To try and find out which side is right, Britain’s National Radiological Protection Board has embarked on a review of existing studies to see if together they provide any indication that something real is going on. Simultaneously, two new studies looking into the illness will be conducted by the country’s Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme.

Many physicians aren’t waiting for governments to verify the existence of EHS. According to an article published by England’s Daily Telegraph, many physicians believe they are seeing more patients with this condition because, in the words of one doctor, “we are living in a more electrically polluted environment."

Swedish experts agree. Their research has shown an increase in the numbers of mast cells near skin surfaces when that skin is exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs), a finding which clearly demonstrates that such fields are capable of triggering at least one kind of physical response in the human body. Scientists also note that the brain itself has an electric field. It’s only natural, they say, to expect that external EMFs would cause interference with our own fields and result in some kind of effect on bodily systems and cellular functions.

While we can’t claim to have seen data that clearly points one way or another, the debate does closely remind us of the controversy that surrounded MCS, a.k.a. environmental illness, when that condition first emerged. Early sufferers of MCS were labeled hypochondriacs and their supporters in the medical community were called crackpots. Over time, the accumulated evidence forced these harshly critical skeptics to admit that they’d been wrong. In the light of this history, there’s no reason to suspect EHS non-believers won’t someday be wiping the same egg off their face. One thing is for certain, when more about this possible condition is known, we’ll tell you about it right here.
