A NOTE FROM RANDAL
Hello everyone,
I am really amazed that the last issue and this issue contained mainstream headlines
for herbal products. Last week's issue was on cancer and Anamu and this week morning
sickness is being tied to the herb Ginger. Sure lends credence to the old time
suggestion, drink ginger ale for a queasy stomach.
However, back then they included some real ginger in the ginger ale products.
These days, I think the only way to get ginger in your ginger ale is to go to
a health food store and read the labels before you make your purchase.
Many years back we won a cruise with Nature's Sunshine and we encountered some
rough waters. I began to get sick at my stomach from sea sickness. Nature's Sunshine
had given us a gift bag when we boarded the ship. Inside the bag they had included
a bottle of ginger capsules. Upon taking them, I noticed in a short period of
time complete relief. Sure made me a believer of ginger and motion sickness problems.
Other individuals, I know personally, have had problems with car sickness and
taking the ginger they have reported that the car sickness has improved greatly.
On a personal note, we are both doing well here in Virginia and we should break
ground next month on the building of our new home. We have had some cool weather
here off and on. Looking forward to fall coming our way.
Until next time,
Randal

TREATING MORNING SICKNESS, GINGERLY - By Jennifer Thomas
THURSDAY, Oct. 3 (HealthScoutNews) -- Pregnancy gives rise to a host of wonderful
emotions, such as joy and excitement. It's also a good excuse to eat ice cream
every night.
However, expectant mothers must often cope with a very unpleasant side-effect:
morning sickness.
An estimated 60 percent to 80 percent of pregnant women suffer from morning sickness,
which is actually a misnomer because the nausea and vomiting associated with it
can last all day long.
Fortunately, relief may be on the way: A new study has found the herb ginger can
relieve the queasiness in many women.

POLICOSANOL: THE NEW NATURAL CHOLESTEROL FIGHTER - by Sid Shastri
For the past few years, the most potent and popular method of naturally reducing
cholesterol was through red yeast rice extract supplements. Red yeast rice extracts
contain a powerful cholesterol-reducing agent called lovastatin. Lovastatin is
one of three natural statins; the other two are simvastatin and pravastatin. Lovastatin
can be manufactured by fermenting red yeast (Monascus purpureas) on rice in a
very specific manner to yield statins.
The FDA has warned companies marketing red yeast containing lovastatin that these
products are unapproved new drugs since traditional red yeast (such as that sold
in Chinese groceries) contain undetectable or trace amounts of lovastatin. Meanwhile,
the National Nutritional Foods Association and House Government Reform Committee
Chair Dan Burton have asked the FDA to clarify whether red yeast rice extract
can continue to be sold in the U.S. Though it appears that the legal issue regarding
red yeast supplements continues, there is an effective and safer alternative:
policosanol.

HEALTH RELATED TIPS
One Book Says To Take This, Another Says Don't - Which Is Right?
When I first started taking herbal supplements, I ran into the conflict of which
author is correct. I would read one book and the author would say take this for
this particular problem. Another book would say don't take that for any reason.
Finding there was no consensus of opinion, I decided to establish some guidelines
to follow early on in my health adventure.
They go as follows:
1. MAKE SURE THE AUTHOR REFERENCES HERBS YOU CAN GET So many times, I used to
look at herb books and they would reference a particular herb. I would get excited
and then march down to my local health food store and to my dismay they never
heard of it, or even worse they couldn't find it anywhere. In deciding which authors
to follow, I wanted a book that had herbs I had access to.
2. QUALIFY DISSENTING OPINIONS If someone says don't take something but every
other author says its OK or they don't mention it at all, then I ignore the dissenting
opinion unless they offer a reasonable explanation.
3. MANY PATHS TO THE SAME GOAL I have found over the years that there are many
paths to the same goal using nutritional supplements. What one author says to
take for a particular problem may help some people and for others it has no effect.
Another may suggest another product just as convincingly. Which one should we
follow?
My solution is to look at other books they've written to see their overall approach
and attitude. See if you feel comfortable with what they have to write. After
doing that for a few authors, I standardized on three (3) resources that I consult
90% of the time. The rest of the resources in the marketplace come and go and
I never read or examine their material unless my normal sources don't address
my particular questions.
I standardized on (1) "The How To Herb Book" by Velma Keith and Monteen
Gordon, (2) Joan Vandergriff's "Nature's Treasure Chest" and (3) "Health
Handbook" by Louise Tenney (especially for amino acids information).
Standardizing on a few good resources will eliminate confusion and feeling overwhelmed
with all the possible solutions that are available.
Good Luck - In Your Herbal Adventure!

LAUGHING LINES
Bury The Body?
George went on a vacation to the Middle East with most of his family including
his mother-in-law. During their vacation and while they were visiting Jerusalem.
George's mother-in-law died. With the death certificate in hand, George went to
the American Consulate Office to make arrangements to send the body back to the
States for proper burial.
The Consul, after hearing of the death of the mother-in-law told George that the
sending of a body back to the States for burial is very, very expensive. It could
cost as much as $5,000.00. The Consul continues, in most cases the person responsible
for the remains normally decides to bury the body here.. This would only cost
$150.00.
George thinks for some time and answers, "I don't care how much it will cost
to send the body back; that's what I want to do."
The Consul, after hearing this, says "You must have loved your mother-in-law
very much considering the difference in price."
"No, it's not that," says George. "You see, I know of a case many
years ago of a person that was buried here in Jerusalem. On the third day he arose
from the dead. I just can't take that chance.
