Hello Everyone,
This issue concludes my articles on improving the assimilation of your
nutrients. I do hope they have been of help to you or you have been able to
share the information with others.
Nature's Sunshine's Annual Convention will be September 4-8 in Nashville.
We are planning to go and we are looking forward to learning more about how
we can help ourselves and others to better health. Nature's Sunshine is
coming out with some new and exciting products that I will begin to discuss
in the 09/11/02 issue.
We are in desperate need of rain where we are in Virginia. Hope your area
of the country is doing better than we are. Rationing has begun and it sure
reminds you how important rain can be to all living beings.

In the nutrition column, I included some healthy after school snacks for
those young ones in your life. I am sure even though many years have passed
a snack is just as exciting as it was when we all grew up. Some things

STRESS GOT YOU DOWN? PUT SLEEP AT THE TOP OF YOUR TO-DO LIST by Erin Hill
Advice For Stress-Free Days, Sleep-Filled Nights
(ARA) - To do today: work projects, school activities, sports practice,
music lessons, neighborhood meeting, household chores, and family time. Oh
-- and somewhere on your list, try to find time for a good night's sleep.
"We all have too much to do, so be sure to derive the greatest benefit from
your time in bed," stated Andrea Herman, director of the Better Sleep
Council. "How well you sleep at night can make all the difference in how
productive and stress-free you'll be the next day, whether you're scrubbing
the bathrooms before houseguests arrive or rushing to the grocery store to
stock up."
Like proper nutrition and exercise, sleep is essential to feel your best.
Because we all want to stay healthy, it's important that we get the best
night's sleep possible every night.
To help ensure relaxing days and sleep-filled nights, the Better Sleep
Council offers the following tips:
1) Give yourself "permission" to go to bed. As hard as it may be to
put away
your "to do" list, make sleep a priority. You'll thank yourself in the
morning.
2) Take care of yourself. Cut back on alcohol, caffeine and smoking, all of
which can make it more difficult to fall and stay asleep. Regular exercise
can help relieve tension and stress.
3) Unwind early in the evening. Finish chores and run errands early in the
evening so you can clear your mind and relax before bedtime.
4) Keep regular hours. Go to bed around the same time each night and wake up
close to the same time each morning to keep your biological clock in check.
5) Create a restful place to sleep. Be sure your bedroom is cool, quiet and
dark, and that you are sleeping on a comfortable, supportive mattress and
foundation. A bed that's too small, too soft, too hard or too old can rob
you of sleep.

HEALTH RELATED TIPS
STRESS AND HOW IT RELATES TO OUR ASSIMILATION
I mentioned last issue that I would cover stress and our emotional health
and how it relates to assimilation of the nutrients we consume. For
purposes of brevity, I will be discussing the effects of long term or
continual stress. Sudden stress does cause some imbalances but many
professionals agree that long term stress causes the most damage.
Stress burns up our B vitamins and minerals at a very fast pace. If we are
under continual stress and we are taking the abovementioned items, there is
a good chance we will need to take more than the usual amounts just to break
even.
This can be observed if we are taking B vitamins and minerals before we are
under stress. Our quality of life is good our health is doing well and we
have no health complaints to speak of. Enter the long term stressor(s)
(worry, bitterness, anger, fear are a few examples). We begin to notice
that our health isn't the same. In fact, our state of health is weakening.
Our first question should be what has changed. If we are fortunate we
remember the addition of the stressor(s). If it were me, I would examine
what gets used up during stressful times and begin to add in or increase
those quantities from what I was taking before the stressor(s) were added.
Please make sure you read all warnings and cautions before increasing any
nutrients past the label recommendation.What does all this have to do with
assimilation?
B vitamins help us to assimilate the nutrients we ingest. The B vitamins
help with carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Minerals also aid in
metabolism too.
Our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made. Each body system is
synergestically tied into another system. Making it impossible to function
independently. The absence of minerals or B vitamins would be like trying
to build a house without nails. We could have all the workers eager to work
but without the right building blocks we couldn't complete the project.
Cortisol is secreted by the adrenal glands when we are under a stressful
situation. "According to medical information, long-term over-secretion of
cortisol has direct physiological effects on the following functions:
carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, protein metabolism, inflammatory effects
and lipid metabolism."1
Is it any wonder when we are under stress that our ability to metabolize and
assimilate our foods and nutrients we consume is impaired. Now that we have
identified the importance of less stress, what do we do if we can't avoid
stressful situations? I have prepared a list of resources below that has
been very helpful for me personally. These resources may or may not help
you but I did want to make the list for those who could benefit.

THE BAPTIST DOG STORY
A Baptist couple felt it important to own an equally Baptist pet, so they
went shopping. At a kennel specializing in Baptist dogs, they found one that
they liked a lot. When they asked the dog to fetch the Bible, he did it in a
flash. When they instructed him to look up Psalm 23, he complied equally
fast, using his paws with dexterity. Impressed, they purchased the animal
and went home.
That night, they had friends over. They were so proud of the new Baptist dog
and his skills they called the dog and showed off a little. The friends were
impressed and asked whether the dog was able to do any of the usual dog
tricks as well. This stopped the couple cold, as they hadn't thought of
normal dog tricks. "Well," they said, "let's try it out."
Once more they called the dog and they clearly pronounced the command,
"heel." Quick as a wink, the dog jumped up, put his paw on the man's
forehead, closed his eyes in concentration, and bowed his head...
It was then that the couple realized they'd been deceived. The dog was
Pentecostal.
