A NOTE FROM DONNA
It's really been hot here in Virginia the past few days and as I've noticed
the weather in many areas of the country is the same. Be sure to keep
drinking fluids and if you feel weak or dizzy, remember that potassium can
balance that out for you. Avoid the sugary gatorades and keep some herbal
potassium supplements on hand (which will come with the necessary sodium
also - Nature always makes things in balance). Besides potassium, your body
sweats out a lot of other minerals. You might want to have some liquid

Don't forget your pets. This heat is hard on them also. Provide plenty of
fresh water for them (bacteria grows quickly in hot weather, so keep the
bowl cleaned) and add a fan if necessary to your pets area.

MAKE YOUR OWN MASSAGE OILS

Combine aromatic, dried herbs, some almond oil, a couple of willing
bodies, and a little time and you've got a recipe for relaxation.
Making your own scented massage oils is so easy that you have no
excuse for not having some on hand all the time. Here's how you do it.
First, gather your herbs--anything that has a pleasing aroma is fair
game, though I'll provide some specific recipes in the next tip. You
can use fresh or dried herbs. Fresh herbs tend to have more essential
oils, while dried herbs tend to measure more (that is, you get more
per cup than fresh), so consider them equal.
If you use fresh herbs, you'll need to chop them coarsely. Then, put
the herbs in a quart glass jar and cover them with oil (you can use
almond, coconut, olive, safflower, and even canola oil). Dried herbs
may absorb more oil than fresh--so be sure to keep them covered.
Next, you want to warm the oil/herb mixture to about 80 degrees and
keep it there for a couple of hours. You can put the jar in a warm
place--away from direct sunlight--or you can use a double boiler, a
barely warm oven, or a slow cooker on the lowest setting. Check your
mixture frequently, making sure the herbs are covered and the oil
isn't getting too hot. When the oil has taken on the fragrance of the
herbs, it's ready. Simply strain the herbs (a strainer lined with
cheesecloth does nicely) and you're ready to go.
These oils will keep for several months if you store them in a cool,
dark place. They'll last even longer if you keep them in the
fridge--just be sure to warm them up before use!

4 teaspoons Sesame Seeds
1 tablespoon Ground Coriander
1 tablespoon Cumin
2 teaspoons Canola Oil
1/2 cup chopped Scallions (4)
3 cloves minced Garlic
1 can (15 oz.) Chickpeas, rinsed & drained
1 cup cooked Brown Rice
2/3 cup Wheat Germ
3 tablespoons fresh Lemon Juice
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/4 teaspoon fresh Black Pepper
4 (1/2-inch-thick) Tomato slices
4 (6-inch) Pita Breads
Non-fat Plain Yogurt or soy yogurt for garnish
Spinach leaves for garnish
Heat a small skillet over low heat. Add sesame seeds & toast, stirring
almost constantly until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Add coriander and
cumin; cook, stirring until fragrant, about 10 to 20 seconds longer. Turn
out onto a plate & let cool. Grind with a mortar & pestle or in a spice
mill & set aside. Add oil to skillet & heat over medium heat. Add
scallions & garlic; ésaute until softened, about 2 minutes. Set aside.
Prepare a grill or preheat the broiler. In a medium bowl, mash chickpeas
coarsely with a potato masher. Stir in rice, 1/3 cup wheat germ, lemon
juice, salt, pepper, the reserved sesame seed-spice mixture and the
scallion-garlic mixture; mix well. Shape into four 3/4-inch-thick
patties. In a shallow dish, dredge the patties in the remaining 1/3 cup
wheat germ, pressing firmly onto the patties.
Grill or broil patties & tomato slices on a lightly oiled rack until
browned & heated through, about 3 minutes per side. Tuck patties into
pitas; garnish with yogurt & spinach.

Laughter is Good Medicine!
OLD STUMPY
Stumpy and his wife Martha went to the state fair every
year. Every year Stumpy would say, "Martha, I'd like to
ride in that there airplane." And every year Martha would
say, "I know Stumpy, but that airplane ride costs ten
dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars."
One year Stumpy and Martha went to the fair and Stumpy
said to Martha, "Martha, I'm 71 yrs old. If I don't ride
that airplane this year I may never get another chance."
Martha replied, "Stumpy that there airplane ride costs
ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars."
The pilot overheard them and said, "Folks, I'll make you
a deal. I'll take you both up for a ride. If you can
stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word, I won't
charge you, but if you say one word it's ten dollars."
Stumpy and Martha agreed and up they go. The pilot does
all kinds of twists and turns, rolls and dives, but not
a word is heard. He does all his tricks over again, but
still not a word. They land and the pilot turns to Stumpy,
"By golly, I did everything I could think of to get you to
yell out, but you didn't."
Stumpy replied, "Well, I was gonna say something when
Martha fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars!"
