MUNCHAUSEN SYNDROME

Munchausen syndrome, essentially defined as faking an illness just to get
attention. Children and adolescents with this disorder are usually bland,
depressed, and fascinated by medicine, similar to adults with the syndrome.

Munchausen syndrome has more exceptional indicators. Patients are overly
dramatic about their illness, and may go to violent extremes to convince the
hospital staff of their aches or illness, including beating themselves,
reopening wounds, and ingesting and injecting anything, including other
people's medication. Proper diagnosis is further complicated by the fact
that some children experience somatic illness, feeling real pain without an
obvious physical cause.
