A NOTE FROM DONNA

Mother's Day is only a few days away. Growing up is hard and sometimes
it leaves strained relationships --- but parenting is hard too --- harder
for some than others. Regardless of the past, we should take time to honor
our parents. Since I don't have mine any more, I think of those who have
been like a mother to me this past year and celebrate any way.

We've got bluebird babies in one house, eggs about to hatch in another, and
a third couple just getting started. We hung 4 houses and they sure seem to
be happy about it. It's so nice to hear the Papa singing to the Mama during
the day. Every now and then he catches a juicy treat and takes it in to
Mama while she keeps the eggs warm. For the couple who has the babies,
they're giving all those juice treats to the babies.

Nature is an awesome experience of life and true living! We're headed off
to the Migratory Bird Celebration at Chincoteague Island on the east coast

Guess you can tell we like birds --- guess it's a mindset! Being "free as a
bird." :-)

MOTHER'S DAY AND VEAL
Mother's Day makes me think of veal. Veal is "made" by taking the male
calves from their mothers at birth. They are chained in small wooden crates
for the rest of their lives. Veal production is so cruel that it has been
outlawed in other developed countries. Being a mom and knowing how
attentive mother cows are to their offspring, this is truly a sad situation..

HERBED VEGETABLE SOUP

Recipes

2 tablespoons margarine or butter
1 large onion, chopped
1/4 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon ground mace, divided
1 pound turnips, peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks
1 pound new potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks
3 pound squash (butternut, Hubbard, pumpkin or acorn), peeled and cubed
(about 6 cups)
4 cups chicken broth (my suggestion is Westbrae's Unchicken Broth)
1/2 teaspoon TABASCO brand Pepper Sauce

In 4 to 5 quart saucepan, combine margarine, onions, thyme and half of
mace; cook over medium-high heat, stirring often, until onions are
translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add turnips, potatoes and squash; cook over medium heat, stirring
occasionally, until vegetables begin to soften, about 30 minutes. Add
broth and TABASCO® brand Pepper Sauce and bring to a boil over high
heat. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until vegetables are very tender,
about 30 minutes.

Process mixture, a portion at a time, in food processor or blender until
smooth. Return to pan and heat until steaming.

Sprinkle individual servings with remaining mace.

NO PROBLEM!

A school teacher injured his back and had to wear a plaster cast around the
upper part of his body. It fit under his shirt and was not noticeable at
all.

On the first day of the term, still with the cast under his shirt, he found
himself assigned to the toughest students in school. Walking confidently
into the rowdy classroom, he opened the window as wide as possible and then
busied himself with desk work.

When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he took the desk stapler and stapled
the tie to his chest. Discipline was not a problem from that day forth!
