I don't know why they call these hot unbearable days in Alabama "Dog Days,"
but I'm sure there isn't a dog around that is enjoying it any more than me.
If anybody knows the logic behind that title, please reply and let me know.

We have had very little rain and a nearby lake is now 5 feet below its
normal level. We're in the home stretch....I see on the calendar that Fall
is on its way. I will hang on!

School is starting up in our area. When I lived in PA, it didn't begin
until after Labor Day. Maybe the heat down here fogs the brain and they
begin earlier so they can get them recharged to function again - LOL.

Where ever you are......take some time to sip some lemonade and "enjoy" the
last days of summer.

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL - Essential for Herbal Medicine Chest

Only in the last few years has the public really become aware of activated
charcoal's ability to prevent some poisons from being absorbed into the
bloodstream. While activated charcoal has been used in hospital emergency
rooms for decades, poison control centers have generally told people,

GRILLED VEGETABLE SALAD
(Exported from MasterCook)

1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
2 1/2 teaspoons olive oil
1 tablespoon raspberry-flavored vinegar
1 clove garlic -- minced
2 ears fresh corn -- husked
1 small zucchini -- cut in half lengthwise (about 1/4 pound)
1 small yellow squash -- cut in half lengthwise (about 1/4 pound)
1large red bell pepper -- cut into quarters
1 medium eggplant -- cut in half lengthwise (about 1 pound)
2 slices purple onion -- (1/2-inch)
1 large unpeeled tomato -- cored and cut in half crosswise
Vegetable cooking spray

Combine rosemary and next 4 ingredients in a bowl; stir with a whisk until
blended. Brush ears of corn and the cut surfaces of the remaining
vegetables with half of olive oil mixture, and set aside.

Coat grill rack with cooking spray; place on grill over medium-hot coals.
Place vegetables, cut sides down, on rack. Cook 5 minutes; brush with
remaining olive oil mixture. Turn vegetables over, and cook an additional 5
minutes or until tender. Remove from grill; cut each ear of corn into 6
pieces. Cut each onion slice into quarters. Cut remaining vegetable pieces
in half. Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1/2 cup).

MONEY WORRIES DOUBLE RISK OF GUM DISEASE

People who have a tough time handling the stress of money woes are twice as
likely to develop severe gum disease, a new study finds. However, they can
easily decrease some of the risk by continuing to brush their teeth and
floss, and by working to reduce stress, says co-author Robert Genco
("JEN-co") of the State University of New York at Buffalo.

The 1,400-person study by Genco and colleagues at the University of Michigan
appears in this month's issue of the Journal of Periodontology. They found
that people under long-term financial strain altered their habits, and that
includes neglecting oral hygiene or grinding their teeth.

There were some physiological changes as well, including changes in saliva
composition and a weakening in the body's ability to fight infection. Other
day-to-day stresses were not associated with gum disease, nor were people
who dealt with their financial strain in an active way rather than sinking
into their emotions.
