Sorry we're late with the newsletter! We'll be answering email all day today. Thanks for your patience if you've sent us an email.

We just returned yesterday from 7 nights in Costa Rica with 3 nights at a Private Rainforest Preserve Jungle Lodge with an experimental fruit orchard (yummy!) and 2 nights at the Arenal Volcano Observatory, and 2 nights in San Jose. Words cannot begin to tell you about the experience. We really love wildlife, birds and flowers. It must be something like that in Heaven......surely it was what the Garden of Eden looked like!?

Can you believe we won it with the ONLY ridiculously low bid on an internet site? We had to leave in three weeks which meant we needed to change our schedule around a bit......but it is so wonderful to work from our home and be able to set our own schedule.

We appreciate you who are our customers. We do not take you for granted. We know that we are able to do what we love to do and to do it at home because of you being part of The Herbs Place on the web. Thanks!

**HERBS IN THE NEWS**

HERBS ARE NOT "Approved" by FDA

Next time you hear massive warnings from the FDA because
herbs aren't "approved" by them, think of this report:

The recently approved arthritis drug, etanercept (Enbrel),
may increase the chance of potentially life-threatening
infections in some patients with rheumatoid arthritis,
according to a warning issued FDA. The drug, a genetically
engineered protein, was approved for the treatment of
moderate to severe, active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The
FDA notes that the drug "can significantly reduce pain and
swollen joints in people disabled with RA." But it is also
known to suppress tumor necrosis factor, an important
infection-fighting protein produced by immune system cells.

Of an estimated 25,000 people given the drug, 30 have
developed serious infections and 6 have died. Although
people with rheumatoid arthritis are prone to infections,
and many of the patients had a history of chronic
infections, the deaths occurred within 2 to 16 weeks after
starting treatment with Enbrel.

**HEALTH IN THE NEWS**

NEW RESEARCH ON MILK

In the last two years, IGF-I has been identified as the key
factor in the growth and proliferation of various cancers
including prostate cancer (SCIENCE - January, 1998), breast
cancer (THE LANCET - May, 1998), and lung cancer (JOURNAL OF
THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE - January, 1999). However,
scientists at the Food and Drug Administration have
previously (incorrectly) argued that this powerful growth
hormone in milk did not survive digestion and cannot alter
human blood chemistry. Now that the evidence is in, the
scientific community has proof of how wrong government
regulators were in approving the genetically engineered
bovine growth hormone (rbGH). Milk from cows treated with
rbGH contains increased levels of IGF-I.

MEDICARE TEAMS UP with DEAN ORNISH.....

In a pretty significant move - Medicare is agreeing to pay
for several hundred heart patients to try Dr. Dean Ornish's
very low-fat, vegetarian diet in place of a bypass or
angioplasty. The program, according to a report from
ABCNews, will cost $7,200 per patient (much lower than the
cost of heart surgery).

This is potentially good news... because Medicare is finally
taking a serious look at the 'cost-benefits' involved for
patients to change their diets instead of always opting for
costly surgeries. Acknowledging the importance of nutrition,
Medicare and other insurance providers will hopefully start
to reimburse Registered Dieticians and other qualified
Nutritionists for their expertise instead of forcing
patients to pay for these services on their own. Only time
will tell if Dr. Ornish's diet will prevail... it is definitely NOT the American Heart Association diet. As of
now, the AHA stands by its recommendations to NOT reduce fat
below 15% of total calories.

**BOOKS, MUSIC & VIDEOS - Not Any More!**

**NO MORE AMAZON! BOOKS, MUSIC & VIDEOS**

We were notified by a friend that Amazon.com, who is the
largest bookseller on the internet, is selling books on
PEDOPHILIA (adults having sex with children). We checked
out the URLs given to us and found it to be true. After
writing Amazon.com about our desire to drop our association
and affiliate program with them if they were going to
continue to sell this kind of stuff, we were very
disappointed in their attitude and response. It is sad that
large corporations can't take a stand to protect our
nation's children.

We had a lot of work into the Book Shop area of our site and now have a lot of work ahead of us due to a major error that occurred in 'unassociating' ourselves with Amazon.com.

However, making one cent from Amazon from somebody who may go through our site for such books is not my idea of 'making a living.'

**FEATURED RECIPE**

Potato and Corn Chowder

4 large Yukon Gold potatoes, cut into 1/2 inch cubes, skin
left on
1 large onion, chopped
2 cups water
1 tsp vegetable bouillon powder
2 tsp dried parsley
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 can (14.5 ounces) cream style corn
1 can (14 ounces) whole kernel corn, drained
1 cup prepared Tofu Moo or other milk substitute

In a medium saucepan, combine the potatoes, onion, water,
bouillon, parsley, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce
heat and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 15 to 20
minutes. Remove pan from heat and stir in both cans of corn.
Put two cups of the mixture into a blender and briefly
puree. Do not over blend or potatoes will become gummy.
Return the pureed mixture to the saucepan, stir in the soy
milk and heat thoroughly. Adjust spices and seasonings to
taste.

ACTUAL MEDICAL RECORD ENTRIES

* Patient has chest pain if she lies on her left side for over a year.

* On the second day the knee was better and on the third day it had completely disappeared.

* The patient has been depressed ever since she began seeing me in 1983.

* Patient was released to outpatient department without dressing.

* Discharge status: Alive but without permission.

* Healthy-appearing, decrepit 69-year old male, mentally alert but forgetful.

* The patient refused an autopsy.

* Patient has left his white blood cells at another hospital.

* The patient's past medical history has been remarkably insignificant with only a 40 pound weight gain in the past three days.
