**DONNA'S COMMENTS**

Did you ever think about adding a wallpaper border to a room? Well, I did last week. So I went and found one that I REALLY liked....then I had to touch up the paint on the walls....then I decided that I could use some left-over paint to redo the trim and the doors......well, that's what I've been doing this week. What's next? Maybe some new furniture? Ha!

What's been very exciting is that many years ago we began taking herbs because I had environmental illness and doctors had no solutions. Being in a room with new paint would have sent me to ER fast! So, on one hand, I am enjoying the painting.....on the other!? Well, let's just say I'm calling a painter for the next project.

A book review of "Noni, Nature's Amazing Healer" by Neil Solomon, M.D., Ph.D.

Noni is a fruit about the size of a potato and has nodules

**HEALTH IN THE NEWS**

BLOOD PRESSURE REGULATION: Salt-Sensitive Hypertension

Scientists have found a gene that plays a key role in controlling
blood pressure. The researchers say the finding is an important
step to developing more effective therapies for hypertension,
which affects 60 million U.S. adults and is a leading cause of
kidney failure. Uncontrolled, high blood pressure can also damage
the heart, brain, arteries and other major organs. The gene,
called sgk, mediates the effects of a key hormone for regulating
sodium and water levels in the body. A disruption in the balance
of these factors can result in blood pressure problems. The
finding "holds the promise of providing better treatments for the
millions of people with salt-sensitive hypertension," said Dr.
David Pearce, assistant professor of medicine at the University
of California, San Francisco.

DEPRESSION CAN SHRINK BRAIN

A study shows clinically depressed people have a smaller brain
region than their psychologically healthy peers. Investigators
say the affected structure is a seahorse-shaped part called the
hippocampus, which is important in learning and memory. The
hippocampus appears smaller in volume in people who have suffered
clinical depression than in those who have not, they say in The
Journal of Neuroscience. "In a previous, smaller study, we found
a relationship between depression and loss of volume in the
hippocampus so we anticipated this finding," said lead study
author Dr. Yvette Sheline, asistant professor of psychiatry,
radiology and neurology at Washington University School of
Medicine in St. Louis. "But we also expected to see an effect
from aging. We thought the hippocampus would be somewhat smaller
in our older subjects who had never been depressed, but instead
we saw significant volume loss only in patients with a history of
depression." Sheline says the finding underscores the importance
of treating and preventing depression.

GARLIC - RAW vs. COOKED?

John Milner, Ph.D., a nutritionist at Penn State University, set
out to discover why cooking garlic destroys its medicinal value.

He fed one group fresh-peeled, raw garlic and fed another group
garlic that was peeled, then cooked. He then exposed both groups
to a carcinogen. The fresh garlic blocked the carcinogen's
effect, but the cooked version didn't.

Then he added another variable--time. He peeled the garlic as
usual, but then let the cloves sit for 10 minutes before cooking.
The cooked garlic provided protection from the carciongen.

According to Milner, when you peel garlic you release an enzyme
called allinase, which triggers a series of chemical reactions
giving garlic its healing properties. Oxygen activates allinase,
while heat inactivates it, so when you peel the garlic and
immediately toss it in the pan, you're not giving the healing
compounds a chance to form.

**FEATURED RECIPE**

GRILLED CORN AND SWEET-ONION SALAD
(From Bobby Flay's Boy Meets Grill) - Serves 8

12 ears of corn, husks and silk removed
1/2 cup olive oil, plus extra for brushing the corn
1/4 aged sherry vinegar
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 garlic clove, minced
2 large red bell peppers, diced
1 large Vidalia onion, thinly sliced, or use a Maui or Walla
Walla onion
4 ripe plum tomatoes, finely chopped
1 jalapeno, finely chopped
1/4 cup finely chopped chives
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium.

In a large pot of boiling water, over high heat, cook the corn 5
minutes, until tender. Brush the corn with olive oil and grill
until slightly charred on all sides, about 2 minutes. Remove from
the grill and with a sharp knife, scrape the kernels into a
medium bowl, or stand each ear on a cutting surface and scrape
downward to remove the kernels.

Combine the vinegar, mustard, and garlic in a large bowl and
slowly whisk in the remaining 1/2 cup of olive oil until
emulsified. Add the corn kernels, bell peppers, onion, tomatoes,
jalapeno, and chives, and toss to coat with the dressing. Season
with salt and pepper.
