Hydrangea aborescens, also called Seven barks (because its stem bark peels off in several layers of different colors), was used by the Cherokee Indians for the urinary system. While it is considered a solvent, it is also a soothing nutrient to help the body expel excessive water and toxins.

In Greek mythology, Hydra was a water monster with nine heads, and if one was cut off, the monster grew back two. A water "hydrant" also helps remind us that hydrangea has to do with the body's water main.

This elegant shrub grows readily in the southern and midwestern U.S. and is considered a "bitter." In herbology, the dried, powdered root is used. Being a solvent ' it Is also important for the gall bladder as well as the kidneys. It has also been favorably used to maintain the health of the prostate gland.

Hydrangea is very high in silicon, needed to maintain flexible arteries, especially important for good blood circulation through the filtering tubules of each kidney. Manganese has only been appreciated the last few years in its ability to strengthen nerves, the immune system, digestion of fats, blood sugar regulation, growth and reproduction. These factors also impact demands on the urinary system.

Also found naturally in relatively large amounts is chromium, essential for proper blood sugar levels and circulatory health. This trace mineral is usually in short supply in the normal American diet.

Hydrangea contains bitter compounds, like the saponin hydrangin. It also contains the flavonoids rutin, quercetin and others, along with soothing mucilaginous compounds.

Gall Bladder Flush -
Generally, people who are trying to flush out their gall bladder will fast for 24-48 hours on pure apple juice (the ingredient label says, "apple juice" only!). The malic acid in apples is said to breakdown gall stones. An herbal laxative (Cascara or LBS II) can be used as needed and Gall Bladder Formula
is usually helpful. Usually 2 capsules of Gall Bladder Formula is taken every 2 hours during the fast. One may also wish to take 2 capsules of Hydrangea
with it which is a stone solvent. At the end of 2 days at bedtime, drink 1/2 c. cold-pressed olive oil and 1/2 c. fresh-squeezed lemon juice mixed. Immediately go to bed and lie on your right side for at least 1/2 hour before going to sleep. In the morning, if you don't have a bowel movement, take an enema. You will see dark black or green objects which look like shriveled peas. You may want to continue the apple juice fast another day and do another olive oil & lemon juice flush at bedtime.

Heel Spur -
"I took 400 mg. of Calcium per day along with 2 capsules of Burdock and 2 capsule of HYDRANGEA
three times a day. It seems to be all gone!" KW

Kidney Stones -
"My husband started having trouble with kidney stones and had passed three over a 3-4 month period. The pain was so bad one time he went to the hospital. They took x-rays, gave a pain shot, told him it looked like he'd pass the stone and sent him home after 12 hours. This cost $800 plus the trip to the doctor's office was $105 with pain pills costing $1 each. After 4 months of very little help, he began taking Nature's Sunshine JP-X, HYDRANGEA
and Pau d'Arco tea.He quit drinking coffee and tea and began drinking Herbal Beverage. We gradually started changing our diet - cutting out white flour, sugar, pork, salt and fried foods. Within 2 months he passed 3 more stones without pain. It's now over 5 months since he started taking herbs and he hasn't had any kidney stones." H.Hoover

Blood in Urine -
"I had blood in my urine for 2 years. I used HYDRANGEA
since it's known to dissolve 'stones.' My next test was clear. My sister's had the same problem and she used it with results also." Irene M.

Rabbit With Blood in Urine
- "Last summer I was given advice to use HYDRANGEA
on our 7-year old rabbit that had blood in the urine. It was suggested that she may be trying to pass a kidney stone. I began giving it to her and it cleared up. Since she is an older rabbit, I've decided to continue it as a preventative so she gets some each day on her apple. It's nice to have a natural solution and something so simple to help her." Ruth
