A Note From Donna

In the last issue I mentioned our cat, Squeek, that was diagnosed with FIV.  The vet didn't expect her to live the week out but here we are two weeks later.  She began eating and drinking after 4 days and was back to normal eating about 6 days later.  The fever is under control and the mucus is gone and we're working on building her immune system and attacking the virus.

The medical world doesn't have anything for viruses, but the plant kingdom does.  The wise Creator knew we would need anti-viral properties and there's a lot of them in herbs and essential oils.  We're using a formula we've loved for a long time:  VS-C.  It's a Chinese formula and has been a blessing to us for many years to keep a few sniffles from turning into a cold or flu.  You can read what's in it here:
VS-C Herbal Viral Formula

We are still working on the eye that was bulging and totally dilated.  It still isn't working perfectly fine, but the bulging seems to be going down and is hardly noticeable.  Her personality is definitely back and she's very active.

Here's a photo of our little Squeek feeling pretty good and seemingly back to normal.  You can see the right eye is more dilated than the other one.  Sometimes it works now and sometimes now so we are seeing continual improvement and are so happy to have her back to life!

Until next time, make it a happy and healthy day!

Some people who suffer from migraines say that a washcloth soaked in vinegar, put on the forehead, will help get rid of the pain. Others have used an herb called Feverfew.  Here's a link with info:

An Internal Clock Causes The Blues

We all have a number of clocks within us that help keep life constant in changing surroundings. The pineal gland is one clock that helps us adjust to our surroundings like the changing lengths of daylight through the year.

Earlier in this century many scientists, having no understanding of the pineal, decided that it had no purpose and was left over as a vestige from our evolution.  Others knew it must have a purpose because they knew we have not evolved.

If you are one of those people who typically feel a bit more lethargic or even depressed during the darkest months of winter, you might be able to
blame your pineal, which is located near the center of your brain. How can a gland deep in the center of the brain know how long the days are?

Light causes our bodies to make certain chemicals. When days are short, those chemicals are scarce, so the pineal cannot make from these chemicals the hormones that encourage the alertness we feel in the spring and summer. In addition, your pineal has a private nerve hookup to your eyes, so it can literally see for itself how much light is available!  Scientists have found that adding artificial light during winter can sometimes help the winter blues.

Our bodies are a network of complex control systems and chemical factories - a complex union of systems that go beyond the abilities of the best human designers, but which testify to the wisdom of the Creator!

Garlic Research - Tell Yourself Again That Garlic is Good For You

Garlic can help you reach your health peak, and if you are worried about the smell, health food stores now offer an odorless variety. This versatile herb helps reduce cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure, thins the blood to prevent heart attacks and strokes, acts as an expectorant and decongestant to help prevent chronic bronchitis, fights infections and strengthens the immune system.

It has a track record that goes back at least 5,000 years. One ancient Egyptian manuscript lists 22 medical ailments for which garlic is recommended, including headaches, throat disorders and physical weakness. Garlic was used as an energy booster by laborers building the pyramids. Ancient physicians on every continent wrote about the curative powers of garlic. More recently, at the start of this century, garlic was used extensively for its antibiotic properties and, for a time, was the therapy of choice in some areas against tuberculosis.

In World War I, garlic was used to treat typhus and dysentery and, in World War II, to ward off septic poisoning and gangrene in battle wounds. It is still a staple in tropical medicine to fight typhus and cholera. Alternative doctors throughout the world use garlic to flush dangerous toxins from the body.

Modern research daily spotlights the cure-all qualities of garlic. A 10-month study by Dr. Arun Bordia at India's Tagore Medical College, revealed that 18 cloves daily drastically reduced the blood cholesterol and fat levels in his patients.  In another experiment, Dr. Bordia divided 62 patients with coronary heart disease and high cholesterol levels into two groups. One group received garlic oil daily -- the equivalent of 18 garlic cloves -- for 10 months. The other group did not.

Those on garlic oil showed better heart health, lower cholesterol (an average drop from 305 to 218) and 83 percent less tendency to form dangerous blood clots. This study was borne out by Dr. Eric Block, head of the chemistry department at State University of New York, and his associates, who found a chemical in pure garlic that keeps blood platelets from clumping and forming deadly clots that cuase heart attacks and strokes.

Most doctors recommend that people who are prone to develop heart attacks take aspirin as a blood-thinner. Aspirin does the job, but it can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and peptic ulcers with long-term use.

You may not want to take 18 cloves a day, but you can do yourself good by including it in your supplemental program when you can't eat it fresh.  Here's a high-potency tablet that will give you a clove's worth of potency and benefits.  It is dehydrated in a carefully controlled environment to preserve enzymes and other heat-sensitive compounds that are responsible for so many of  the nutritional benefits inherent in fresh garlic:

Essential Oils For Health

Essential Oils:  Nature's Sunshine vs. A Popular Competitor

The GC/MS are widely known as two of the most important tools for identifying  and analyzing volatile oils. Recently Nature's Sunshine's Lavender Essential Oil  was compared with a popular competitor's lavender oil using all of these methods.

The  Nature's Sunshine product outperformed the competitor in every test. Using GC/MS,  it was found that Nature's Sunshine's lavender oil contained greater amounts of  many key constituents than the other sample.  See the graph here:  "/index.php?controller=cms&id_cms=2"
Nature's Sunshine vs. Young Living

The competitor's sample indicated the use of two different  species of lavender, something you'll never find in Nature's Sunshine's pure lavender  oil. Higher peaks on the Nature's Sunshine graph show that our lavender oil is a much more powerful product.

The quality of essential oil products differs greatly. Count  on Nature's Sunshine for the premium quality you expect and deserve. You  can be sure that Nature's Sunshine Products has analyzed its complete line of  essential oil products. Using high-tech Gas Chromatography (GC) and Mass Spectrometer  analysis (MS), we test each lot of essential oil to ensure it is 100% pure, free  from contaminants and measures up to strict quality standards. Because an oil's  aroma is just as important as its chemical fingerprint, all oils also undergo  strict olfactory (smell) evaluation.

Health News For Kids

Alternative Medicine Common in Kids, But Docs Unaware

In places as far apart as Wales and Australia, about half of the children seen at pediatric hospitals are using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), investigators report.

In a second study, British researchers found that children with chronic diseases were three times more likely to use CAM than healthy children.

In both studies, reported in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, the researchers found that parents and their children were unlikely to discuss CAM use with their doctors.

CAM was used by 41 per cent of patients in Cardiff and 51 per cent in Melbourne. Only about one third of patients or their parents reported CAM use to their doctors. "The poor communication highlights the importance of local policy development," the authors say, to promote a dialogue about alternative medicine between patients and their health care providers.

Which of Your Five Senses is Most Important?

Which sense could be lost with the least threat to your life? Most people consider their sense of sight the most important. While the loss of sight is a terrible tragedy, life can go on. Lose your sense of smell and food will be flavorless, but you can get by. Loss of hearing, too, is a great loss, but the loss can be adjusted to. And few people's lives are threatened by the loss of the sense of taste.

However, if you lose your sense of touch, you lose your sense of pain and therefore any warning that you might be injuring yourself. Unfortunately there are people who have no sense of touch. Sometimes they receive life-threatening injuries because they cannot feel pain.

Science has shown that touching is necessary for life. Newborn animals that are licked by their mothers have a higher resistance to disease. They are also more likely to live to adulthood than newborns who are untouched by their mothers. Chihuahua pups have a notoriously high rate of death because their mothers are often unwilling to lick them. Lambs will die after birth if their mothers do not lick and nuzzle them. Even human infants who are not lovingly touched enough will suffer from depression, poor sleep, weight loss, poor immunity and, in extreme cases, even death.

Nutrition Is A Choice

Insanely Easy Vegetarian Chili

This chili is SO easy to make. You can pretty much throw whatever you have into the pot and it'll be great. (I added some leftover salsa once.) It's very colorful, not to mention delicious.

Prep Time:  25 Minutes
Cook Time:  30 Minutes
Ready In:  55 Minutes
Servings:  8

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup chopped onions
3/4 cup chopped carrots
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 cup chopped red bell pepper
3/4 cup chopped celery
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 1/2 cups chopped fresh mushrooms
1 (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes with liquid, chopped
1 (19 ounce) can kidney beans with liquid
1 (11 ounce) can whole kernel corn, undrained
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil

Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Saute onions, carrots, and garlic until tender. Stir in green pepper, red pepper, celery, and chili powder. Cook until vegetables are tender, about 6 minutes.

Stir in mushrooms, and cook 4 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, kidney beans, and corn. Season with cumin, oregano, and basil. Bring to a boil, and reduce heat to medium. Cover, and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Laughter Is Good Medicine

These jokes are from this website:

"I've made up my mind what we'll call the baby if she's a girl," young Mrs Edberg announced when she was eight months pregnant for her first baby. "We'll call her Eucalyptus." The father did not care for this name but he shrewdly said, "What a coincidence, the first girl I loved was named Eucalyptus, and it will bring back pleasant memories." The wife was silent for a moment. "I think we'll call her Elizabeth after my mother," she said.

A young woman had severe PMS, so she asked a friend to recommend a gynaecologist. "I know a great one," the friend said, "but he's very expensive.  He charges $500 for the first visit and $150 for each visit after that." The woman went to see the gynaecologist.  Trying to save money, she greeted the doctor with a loud, "I'm back!" He then proceeded to examine her.  "Very good," he said when he was finished.  "Just continue the treatment I prescribed last time."
