A Note From Randal

Hello Everyone,

Pets sure do help to keep us healthy. We had to say "goodbye" to one of our kitties back in June but the one that is living, with us here in Virginia, is his mom and she's one of the sweetest kitties we've ever had. She was feral, so not exactly cuddly, but she has a look about her that grabs everybody's heart.

Recently my wife got a picture through the glass to the screened porch and I think it's a great one. We have a box of dirt for her to lay in and put grass in that she likes to eat. The photo was taken while she was in the box. She keeps us smiling and smiling keeps the immune system healthy.

Take a look at the picture and add a comment of what you would title it. We love reading those titles.

More grins and more health.

Health In The News

New Fabric Smell

Many people notice a new fabric smell on just-purchased clothes. That "new" smell is a potent mixture of chemicals such as formaldehyde and urea resins. The chemicals are used to 'finish' fabric for a range of purposes, including stain resistance, wrinkle-proofing, and even disinfecting. Most contain volatile organic compounds that are often sensitizers and suspected carcinogens.

To get rid of those chemicals, place clothes in the washer with enough water to cover. Sprinkle one cup of baking soda into the washer and soak clothes overnight. When convenient during the soaking, agitate the machine for a few minutes. Launder as usual.

Some imported clothing companies are now dousing their clothes with long-lasting disinfectants. If the clothing you are about to purchase smells more pungent than usual, put it back on the rack.

Essential Oils For Health

Fight Gum Disease With Eucalyptus Oil

Most likely because of its germ-fighting properties, eucalyptus appears to inhibit the formation of the sticky film on teeth and gums known as plaque. If allowed to build up over time, plaque will turn into a hard mineral shell called tartar that wears away at gum tissue.

Food chemist, Kenji Osawa, of Lotte Central Laboratory, in Saitama, Japan, and his colleagues have isolated a family of compounds from Eucalyptus leaves that in test-tube experiments fight not only the bacteria (Streptococcus mutans and S. sobrinus) responsible for causing cavities but also those (Porphyromonas gingivalis) behind gum disease.

Osawa's employer is not only Japan's largest producer of chewing gum but also a major manufacturer of candy, ice cream, and confectionery products. Osawa says his firm is initially investigating the use of a eucalyptus extract containing a mix of these bacteria-fighting compounds as an anti-cavity additive for sweets.

Snooze Control - Getting a Good Night's Sleep By Melissa Gotthardt

• Work Up A Sweat-- "Exercise not only tires you, it eats up stress hormones that can keep you awake," says Russell Rosenberg, Ph.D., of Atlanta's Northside Hospital Sleep Medicine Institute. In a recent study, subjects ages 50 to 76 reported big improvements in sleep quality after exercising 30 to 40 minutes, four days a week for 16 weeks. Do your exercise early in the day: Vigorous workouts within six hours of bedtime can make it harder to fall asleep.

• Do the Write Thing-- Ease your mind before bedtime by jotting down troubling thoughts. "Positive action, even if it's indirect, can lessen the negative impact of a stressor," says Rosenberg.

• Nix the Naps-- Dozing during the day can create a vicious cycle: Napping interferes with your nighttime sleep, and that leaves you craving a next-day nap. Skip your normal naptime for a day or two and you'll be probably be drowsier at night.

• Pad Your Pads-- For extra shuteye insurance, slip on a pair of cozy socks: Swiss scientists found that prior to be sleep, blood vessels dilate (widen) in the hands and feet. Since circulation typically decreases with age, older blood vessels may not dilate as readily. Warming your feet can help, prompting blood flow to the proper sleep-promoting places.

• Make Waves-- A warm bath an hour or so before bedtime may help you fall asleep faster, according to research by the Cornell Medical Center. After you leave the bath, your body temperature drops off rapidly, mimicking a natural cooldown that triggers sleep

The two teenagers were arrested. The police sergeant told them they were entitled to a phone call. Some time later a man entered the station and asked for them by name.

The sergeant said, "I suppose you're the lawyer?"

"Nope," the chap replied. "I'm just here to deliver their pizza."
