A Note From Randal

Hello Everyone,

We’re going to be taking some time away from the office. Of course, the handcuffs to the laptop will still be intact. We’ve gotta find the key to those handcuffs one of these days 🙂

It’s a common problem when you love what you do.

We will be meeting some friends in Charleston, SC, for a few days so we expect to have lots of fun and laughter. Great for the immune system. You might call it our annual flu shot for the season!

Please take some time to write your representatives on this matter. It affects all of us who use supplements as part of our health program. It would be great to get some tax deductions for them.

Support Fair Tax Treatment for Dietary Supplements

This important legislation would allow consumers to write off dietary supplements and some other natural health products as medical expenses on their taxes and give consumers tax breaks on these health care options.

This initiative will save you hundreds of dollars every year on your health products and will allow many consumers to afford natural, less expensive, preventative health care options often paid for out-of-pocket, not just the conventional and pharmaceutical options that are covered by traditional health insurance.

Contact your Representatives today and encourage them to co-sponsor the
bi-partisan bill H.R. 2627, the Dietary Supplement Tax Fairness Act.

You can take action :

We appeciate all you do for us when you tell your family and friends about this newsletter and our site.

Until next time, be in good health!

Randal

CoQ10 Stops Migraine Headaches

Here’s another news item about the ability of CoQ10 (a nutritional supplement and natural compound) to halt migraine headaches. Many migraine sufferers have experienced a near complete avoidance of migraines after taking CoQ10.

Of course, it also helps to stop eating the foods and drinks that cause migraines in the first place. Especially watch out for MSG (monosodium glutamate) and aspartame, both of which are well known to cause severe migraines in some people.

What About Pre-hypertensive Blood Pressure?

Q: My doctor recently told me I was ‘pre hypertensive.’ She said my blood pressure was 128/85. I thought that was normal.

A: Your doctor is keeping up with the new guidelines released last year. “The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure,” known as JNC 7, suggested new guidance on blood pressure.

It states that patients with a systolic blood pressure of 120-139 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure of 80-89 mm Hg should be considered ‘pre hypertensive.’

Under this new guideline, some 45 million Americans previously considered to be normal would now be classified as having ‘pre’ hypertension. This change was made because of studies that suggested this previously accepted normal blood pressure put individuals at increased risk for cardiovascular problems-primarily strokes. While the risk is lower in this category than what is termed Stage 1 hypertension (140-159/90-99), it is still increased compared to those who have a blood pressure less then 120/80.

Fragrant Floors

Would you like for people to enter your home and say, “What smells so good?”
People with pets would surely enjoy this! 🙂

You can have your home always smelling good with essential oils. These are
natural scents from nature, not chemical fragrances that are now being
reported as toxic to your home, children and pets.

You can make your own carpet deodorizer and when you mop those vinyl floors,
be sure to add an essential oil to the water for anti-bacterial purposes and
a lovely aroma. Add 10-20 drops in your wash bucket. Lemon is a favorite.
It’s antimicrobial and lifts the spirits. You might want to wash your
floors more often with Lemon Essential Oil in the bucket. It has a lot of
beneficial uses besides this, so read more about it here:

Smoking-Related Illnesses in Kids Costly

A U.S. report released Thursday finds treating children for smoking-related illnesses costs the nation nearly $304 million a year.

The American Legacy Foundation — responsible for anti-tobacco programs such as the truth campaign and Circle of Friends — released a report in Washington ddetailing the health and economic effects of secondhand smoke.

The report found tobacco was responsible for more than 26,000 low birth weight cases, 263 cases of sudden infant death syndrome, 300,000 asthma cases and more than 99,000 cases of ear infection in young children in 2001. About $236 million is spent for smoking-related asthma cases and another $49 million for ear infection.

The report shows if states worked to reduce children’s exposure by 1 percentage point each year nearly $27 million could be saved in low birth weight cases and more than $15 million for asthma cases. “We’re hoping through the media to accelerate the rate of quitting attempts,” ALF President Dr. Cheryl Healton told United Press International. “In effect, we will get more people to actually quit (through public education).”

Does Quality Matter in Supplements?
by Donna L. Watkins

Most people are not aware of any difference in getting a drugstore supplement or buying a natural food supplement. They will also tell you that they don’t notice any difference when they take it (unless it makes them sick).

Supplements are used to “fill in” what you miss from your diet, so you should be using food-based supplements, not synthetic ones.

Consider the ingredients in two currently popular drugstore supplements:

Centrum Silver contains:

Polysorbate 80, Red 40, Silica Gel, StearicAcid, Titanium Dioxide, Yellow 6, FDC Blue 2, Crospovidone, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Lactose, Magnesium Stearate, Polyethylene Glycol

Os–Cal 500 contains:

Pharmaceutical grade glaze, Titanium dioxide, Methyl Propyl Paraben, Carnauba Wax, FD&C Yellow # 10, FD&C Blue # 1, Oyster shell powder, Corn syrup solids, Hydroxypropl Methylcellulose, Cornstarch, Sodium starch glycolate, Calcium stearate, Polysorbate 80

Polyethylene glycol #3350 is present in almost every cheap vitamin as is Polysorbate 80, which has been associated with the contaminant 1,4 dioxane, known to cause cancer in animals.

People take supplements to add to their health. Do you think the above ingredients builds health in a body? I don’t. We use food-based supplements because we want to add natural nutrients that we may be missing from our diet.

The Digestive System

The digestive process really begins when you simply think about eating, or even when you smell the aroma of something you want. A drop in blood sugar, the time of day, and the nose also may combine to signal the body that it’s time to eat. These signals awaken the sleeping organs that act upon the food you eat in hundreds of different ways! Digestion is only simple at the general level. Apple and Butternut Squash Soup

6 servings — egg- and dairy-free

1 cup soy milk or low-fat milk, or more as needed
1 large butternut squash (3 lbs.)
1 large red onion, chopped
1 Tbs. plus 1 tsp. vegetable oil
1 tsp. coarse (kosher) salt, or to taste
1 vegetable bouillon cube
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground white pepper, or to taste
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
4 medium apples (any cooking variety), peeled, cored and diced

Preheat oven to 400°F. With sharp knife, cut squash lengthwise in half. Scoop out and discard seeds and fibers. Place squash halves cut side up in shallow baking dish, cover tightly with foil and bake until tender, 45 to 50 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, in large saucepan, heat oil over medium-low heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, 8 to 10 minutes.

Add apples, bouillon cube, ginger, nutmeg and 4 cups water. Mix well. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer until apples are tender, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.

Scoop out squash from shells–you should have about 4 cups of flesh. In food processor, puree half of the squash with 1/2 cup soy milk until completely smooth. Transfer to medium bowl. Repeat with remaining squash and 1/2 cup soy milk; add to bowl.

Transfer half of the apple mixture to food processor. Puree until completely smooth. Return to saucepan. Repeat with remaining apple mixture and add to saucepan along with squash puree. Mix well. Add a little more soy milk if mixture seems too thick.

Return pureed soup to a simmer over low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until flavors have blended and mixture is heated through, 5 to 10 minutes. Stir in salt and white pepper and serve hot.

Mr. Greenberg was an illiterate immigrant, but he worked hard, saved his pennies, and started a small business. It did well, and soon he had enough money to send for the wife and children.

The work kept him very busy, so he never had time to learn to write, but the bank was happy to do business with him, even though his signature consisted of two O’s.

He prospered, he opened more stores, the kids were transferred to private schools, the family moved into a fancy house (with one staircase going nowhere just for show), . . . you get the idea.

One day his banker, Mr. Smith, asked him to drop by.

“So vat’s the problem?” Greenberg asked, a bit anxiously.

Smith waved a bunch of checks at him. “Perhaps nothing,” he said, “but I wanted to be on the safe side. These recent checks of yours are all signed with 3 O’s, but your signature of record has just 2.”

Greenberg looked embarrassed. “I’m sorry about making trouble,” he said, “but my vife said that since I’m now such a high-class rich guy, I should have a middle name!”
