Humming May Help Your Sinuses

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Humming a happy tune can ease the mind
and heart--and may also help the nasal passages, according to a new
report by Swedish researchers.

Dr. Eddie Weitzberg of the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden
and his colleague Jon O. N. Lundberg found that humming lets people
exhale significantly more air from their nasal passages than during
less-whimsical exhalations, an advantage that could lower frequent
hummers' risk of sinus infections.

The researchers determined how much hummers exhaled by measuring
their exhalation of nitric oxide (NO), a gas produced in the lungs
and nasal passages. NO helps blood vessels to dilate, thereby
allowing oxygen-carrying blood to flow more freely. Measuring NO is a
good indication of how much air people are exhaling from their nasal
passages, according to the report in the American Journal of
Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Weitzberg and Lundberg found that hummers exhaled 15 times more NO
than when they silently exhaled. The investigators studied 10 adult,
nonsmoking males, with no history of allergies or any other lung
disorder.

Humming appears to increase the amount of NO funneled into the nose
from the sinuses, the air-containing cavities within the skull that
connect to the nose, the authors note. In addition, humming seems to
help facilitate the exchange of air from the sinuses to the nasal
passages, which may, in turn, help ventilate the sinuses, protecting
them from developing infections.

In particular, Weitzberg and Lundberg mention the potential benefits
of humming on sinusitis, or sinus infections. Symptoms of sinusitis
include nasal congestion and drainage, facial pain and malaise. The
condition is considered chronic when it lasts longer than 6 weeks.

"Proper ventilation of the sinuses is essential for sinus integrity,"
Weitzberg and Lundberg write.

"The data presented here indicate that humming is an extremely
effective means of increasing sinus ventilation," they add.

As such, they suggest that researchers continue to investigate the
benefits of an activity as simple as humming on a person's airflow
through their nose. "It will therefore be of great interest to study
whether daily periods of humming can reduce the risk for sinusitis in
patients susceptible to upper airway infections," Weitzberg and
Lundberg conclude.

The Best Soft Drink For Your Teeth

Love an icy cold soft drink? Then choose a root beer. Of all types of soft
drinks and canned teas, this one does the least damage to your teeth.
Researchers from the dental school of the University of Maryland, Baltimore
determined that non-cola soft drinks, including ginger ale, Mountain Dew,
and Sprite, as well as canned iced tea are much harder on teeth enamel than
any other kind of canned drink, due in large part to acidic flavor
additives, such as such as malic acid or tartaric acid, reports Medical News
Today. Root beer has the least additives, making it the best soft drink for
your teeth.

If you drink soda, you should never brush your teeth till one hour later.
Give your saliva a chance to set up its own defenses. If you brush with the
acid on your teeth, it strips layers of the protective enamel.

The study:
For 14 days the researchers exposed healthy dental enamel to a variety of
popular soft drinks, including Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper,
Sprite, Canada Dry ginger ale, and canned Arizona Iced Tea.

The results:
- All of them weakened and permanently destroyed the tooth enamel.

- Diet sodas had the same bad effect as the sugared versions since the main
culprit is the acidic additives.

- The most harmful were non-cola drinks, which caused two to five times the
damage as darker cola drinks.

- Root beer, which contains the least amount of flavor additives, was found
to be the "safest soft drink to safeguard dental enamel."

- Canned iced tea caused 30 times the damage to tooth enamel as brewed tea
or coffee.

- Brewed black tea, root beer, coffee, and water had a minimal effect.

Drink too much soda and you could face a higher risk of a certain kind of
cancer that is usually fatal.

Adding to the problem is our own mouth acidity. If that increases, the
chemical reaction with the soft drink hurts our teeth even more, according
to lead study author J. Anthony von Fraunhofer.

The end result: tooth decay

One thing you can do to protect your teeth is to rinse your mouth with water
after drinking a soda. We love soft drinks in this country. A whopping 95%
of Americans drink soda. Soft drinks account for about 27% of the beverages
consumed in the United States. The average 12- to 19-year-old drinks about
28 ounces of soft drinks every day. The study results were published in the
General Dentistry, the newsletter of the Academy of General Dentistry.

Chewing Gum Kills Bacteria That Causes Cavities and Gum Disease

Chewing a stick of gum, especially cinnamon-flavored gum, may keep bad
breath away, researchers report. A study has shown that cinnamon-flavored
Big Red gum kills bacteria that are linked to bad breath.

Researchers suspect that a plant oil called cinnamic aldehyde, which is used
for flavoring cinnamon gum, helps kill bacteria, but even gum without
cinnamic aldehyde killed a substantial percentage of bad-breath bacteria,
suggesting that other natural flavorings also play a role.

You can read the whole story here:

If you want to avoid the sugar, and definitely the aspartame on sugar-free
gums, you may want to simply use the essential oils in a rinse twice a day.

Reducing Sugar Cravings
from Sunshine Sharing by Steven Horne

If you crave sweets, there are some ways to reduce sugar cravings naturally.
Sugar cravings occur because one's blood sugar gets low and the body is
looking for a way to bring the sugar level back to normal.

Protein helps stabilize blood sugar levels, so eating small amounts of high
protein foods as snacks during the day will help curtail sugar cravings.
Super Algae or Spirulina can be taken as a vegetable source of protein.
Generally 2-3 capsules every couple hours keeps blood sugar levels stable
while you are withdrawing from a high sugar diet.

You could also mix Ultimate Green Zone powder with pineapple juice and drink
it throughout the day whenever the body starts craving sugar.

Licorce root and stevia appear to stimulate the release of a hormone called
glucagon from the pancreas. This stimulates sugar to be released from
storage in the liver so that blood sugar levels will increase and sugar
cravings cease. Two capsules are usually taken at breakfast and at lunch,
with two more anytime the urge to eat sweets arises.

Mineral deficiencies can also contribute to sugar cravings. Mineral Chi
Tonic can also be used to help reduce the excessive desire for sweet foods.
