Black Walnut is a rich source of the trace mineral chromium and is also high in iodine. Its inner bark, leaves, fruit and unripe husk are used in herbology. The tree grows widely in the western U.S. and Canada and is native to the hardwood forests of the Central Mississippi Valley and the Appalachian region of North America. It is a large tree and can sometimes reach a height of 100 feet and 4-5 feet in diameter. The earliest known reference to the walnut tells that Alexander the Great introduced it to Greece from the Middle East. In fact, in almost every part of the world, the walnut is part of local herbal nutrition.

The happiest people surround themselves with family and friends, don't care
about keeping up with the Joneses next door, lose themselves in daily activities and, most important, forgive easily.

The once-fuzzy picture of what makes people happy is coming into focus as
psychologists no longer shun the study of happiness. In the mid-'90s, scientific journals published about 100 studies on sadness for every one study on happiness.

Obesity is a major health problem in both the US and UK and its incidence is
increasing in both adults and children. Obesity predisposes sufferers to a range of conditions including cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, and hormone-dependent cancers such as breast cancer.

Vegetarians are typically leaner than meat-eaters and obesity is less common in vegetarian populations. Body mass index (BMI) for vegetarians is lower than in meat-eaters and closer to desirable levels.

One study found that obesity levels among vegetarians was only 1/4 that of non-vegetarians. This may be due to vegetarians' lower energy intake overall (with a lower proportion of energy being supplied by fat), a higher intake of dietary fiber and only in men a lower intake of alcohol.

possible roles of animal fat, dietary fibre and alcohol. Int Jnl Obesity v22 p.454-460

Editor's Note:

When I became a vegetarian I had just married and my wife was cooking 4 course meals and packing me gourmet lunches. After a month without the meat, I lost 20 pounds eating better than I ever had being single. My wife lost 12 pounds, so we knew that it was from giving up the meat. It's now a lifestyle that we've had for 26 years and it's so much easier than so many of the diets out there today. Consider this book

Tim runs the 50-meter dash in near-record time and has made the sixth-grade track team. But is his body ready for the regimen that a place on the team will require?

Even though Tim has always been a naturally fast runner, he knew he needed to train to make - and keep - his spot on the team. For the past year, Tim has been doing strength training as part of his exercise routine, so he feels confident that he'll have the endurance and agility to set a few new records and make it through the season injury-free.

So what is strength training and is it safe for your child?

What Is Strength Training?
Also referred to as weight training, strength training enables athletes to build muscle strength by exerting or resisting force. Contrary to the traditional belief that this training method is dangerous for kids or teens, it is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Sports Medicine as a way to improve fitness levels and build strength, provided the program is properly designed and supervised.

The B vitamins offer many health benefits. They help promote energy, maintain the nervous system, improve immune functions and buffer the effects of stress.

Notably, the B vitamins influence the health of most of the internal organs of the body and may reverse the pathogenic courses of many diseases.

Who is responsible for long life? Some people may answer "God" but actually most people credit modern medical science with giving us long life. They point to statistics as their proof.

The life expectancy of a person born in the United States in 1900 was about 45. The life expectancy of a person born one hundred years later in 2000 is over 75. Most people hail drugs, surgery, complicated machinery, organ transplants, and massive treatment modalities for this extension of life.

The truth is that this difference in life expectancy is almost entirely due to improvements in keeping infants alive. When deaths for children up to the age of 2 are removed, statistics reveal that a person born in the year 2000 will live, on average, only 3 years longer than a person born in 1900.

Over and over again the real truth is that the drugs, treatments, and massive medical interventions do not result in people living longer lives. They may not die of the disease they were treated for, but another disease often results from the treatment and that may be the cause of death.

Laughter Is Good Medicine

I was out walking with my then 4 year old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I asked her not to do that.

"Because it's been laying outside and is dirty and probably has germs."

At this point, she looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Wow! How do you know all this stuff?"

"Uh," I was thinking quickly, everyone knows this stuff, "Um, it's on the Mommy test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy."

We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information.

"I get it!!!!" she beamed. "Then if you flunk, you have to be the Daddy."
