Devil's Claw is named for its blossoms that turn into thorny pods with hook-like projections, resembling claws. It is found in the harsh Kalahari Desert of southern Africa and is used by natives for many purposes. Herbalists consider devil's claw a nutritional aid for the structural and immune systems. It has a long history as a traditional medicine of southern Africa. People there use it as a digestive tonic, , to reduce fevers, as an antiinflammatory for arthritis and rheumatism, and for headaches. Scientific Research Researchers compared 12.5 mg of Devil's Claw extract to the anti-inflammatory drug, Vioxx (now off the market). The extract was as effective as the medication to relieve low back pain. (Chrubasik S, Model A, Black A, Pollak S. A randomized double-blind pilot study comparing Doloteffin((R)) and Vioxx((R)) in the treatment of low back pain. Rheumatology (Oxford) 2003 Jan;42(1):141-8 ) The same researchers as above did another study evaluating the extract for non-specific low back pain and osteoarthritis of the knee and hip. Of the 227 patients following the protocol 70% reported significant relief. (Chrubasik S, Thanner J, Kunzel O et al. Comparison of outcome measures during treatment with the proprietary Harpagophytum extract doloteffin in patients with pain in the lower back, knee or hip. Phytomedicine 1999 Apr;9(3):181-94)A French double-blind randomized study of 122 patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis compared Devil's Claw to the anti-inflammatory drug, diacerhein, over a 4-month period. The Devil's Claw extract proved to be as effective as the anti-inflammatory agent and was tolerated much better. (Chantre P, Cappelaere A, Leblan D et al. Efficacy and tolerance of Harpagophytum procumbens versus diacerhein in treatment of osteoarthritis. Phytomedicine 1999 Jun;7(3):177-83 ) The only side effects reported in studies, mainly gastric discomforts, were minor and transient. In one study, a patient reported a headache with tinnitus. Small spontaneous bruises had been reported during use with Coumadin. Nature's Sunshine Advantage For best results, Nature's Sunshine uses only the plant's secondary roots or tubers. Ingredients Each capsule contains 450 mg devil's claw root (Harpagophytum procumbens). Cautions Devil's claw is not recommended during pregnancy because of a possible oxytocic effect.
