DONNA'S COMMENTS

We had a great break with an anniversary trip to the Asheville, NC, area.
Saw a lot of preserves and walked some great woodland trails and native
gardens. We had four nice days to refresh and renew amongst the Spring
bursting blooms. Two highlights were Chimney Rock and Grandfather Mountain.

You can check out these links if you'd like to know more:

Chimney Rock

Grandfather Mountain

The latter was definitely our favorite of privately owned land. The Nature
Conservancy manages a lot of land around Grandfather Mt. They had great
films and a nice nature center with rehabilitated animals that cannot be
released, and also some that can. They had three bear cubs that they were
planning on releasing. They were all up in a tree.

So....it was a nice 27th anniversary celebration! The weather was supposed
to be awful, but it was really nice. We had some misting rain while we
crossed the mile-high swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain, and also on
the way home after that.

Why is it that it seems to take so long to get home when it was such a short
trip to go away? LOL

POLAR BEARS

Polar bears are the world's largest land predators and the largest of the
eight bear species. It is the only bear that eats mostly meat. Polar bears
are under pressure due to the impact of global warming on their Arctic
habitat. As the polar ice caps melt, they have less time to fatten up each
summer, and so more cubs do not survive.

ANTS ONLINE

This new website aims to catalog earth's ants and elevate their clout among
conservationists. It has already logged California's 270 species,
Madagascar's 1,000 species, and will continue region by region for the
world's 10,000 ant species. North America is home to 800 of those species.
Each image on the site is a composite of the 20-40 photographs that bring
all characteristics important for accurate identification into sharp focus.
Designed mainly for scientists and conservationists, the site is getting a
lot of traffic because the slide shows allow people to see how beautiful
ants are.

THOSE AMAZING BIRDS!
*******************

Question:
A bird keeps attacking my window! What's going on?

Answer:

Male birds commonly attack windows during mating season. The bird wrongly
assumes that his own reflection is a rival in his territory. You can
prevent this by hanging an old shirt, cloth or squares of aluminum foil
outside the window to break up the reflection.

We bought some cute vinyl clings of chickadees at the Wild Bird store. They
make our windows look more decorative while serving their function also

South America's Amazon River, located primarily Brazil's rain forests, ranks
as the world's largest river in terms of watershed area, number of

BIGGEST TREES IN THE UNITED STATES

Since 1940, American Forests has documented the largest known specimens of
every native and naturalized tree in the United States. The largest tree of
its species in the country is the National Champion. They determine this by
a formula that computes points for a tree based on its height, trunk
circumference, and crown spread. Trees within five points of one another
are declared co-champions. They count on individuals in the public, just
like you, to identify new potential National Champion Trees.

EARTH-FRIENDLY "LEATHER" PRODUCTS

Used Rubber USA began in 1984 when owner & designer Mandana Macpherson was a
student at Brown University. After spilling a bottle of ink in her leather
backpack, she set out on a quest to make a bag impervious to stains and
spills.

While the initial prototypes she created with a classmate were inspired by
the study of the Found Object art movement, Mandana quickly became aware of
the powerful and positive environmental impact of her work. To manufacture
quality personal accessories in an environmentally sound fashion has been
her goal ever since. Mostly they use truck tubes, the kind kids swim or
sled with, but also incorporate car, motorcycle, and bicycle tube into some
products. All of the rubber is post-consumer waste, which they reclaim from
the waste stream themselves.

Check out the quality and ethics of the company and then take a look at
the products they make. We are not affiliated with them in any way. I just
found them in a magazine I was reading the other day.

HORSE DETERMINATION SAVES INJURED RIDER

With some time to himself, Griffin decided to do something he loves - take
his 13-year-old quarter horse, Mini, out on a ride. On this particular day,
Griffin saddled up Mini and took her trotting down Wade-Stedman Road.
Pretty soon he spotted a dirt path he hadn't noticed before. "I said, 'Nice
path, I'm going to see where it goes,' '' Griffin said.

Seconds later, Griffin was sprawled on his back on the ground, unable to
move.

Apparently, someone had strung a trip wire about six inches high across the
path to discourage trespassers. Mini had tumbled over the wire, sending her
rider flying.

For about two hours, Griffin lay on the ground. The day was already cold,
and he was wondering how he would survive the night.
Then Griffin heard a voice he recognized. It belonged to a friend and
neighbor of his, Adrian Beltran.

" I heard him say, 'Keep on hollering and I'll find you,''' Griffin said.
" When he found me, I said, 'Don't touch me, just call 911.' ''

Beltran had seen Mini standing riderless along Wade-Stedman Road and knew
something was wrong. For Griffin, that's the first miracle in his story -
that his horse knew to stand by the busy road and just wait for two hours.

Griffin's spine was nearly severed. Four vertebrae in his neck and shoulder
area were injured. "The doctors said another quarter inch and I'd be in the
bed permanently,'' Griffin said. "They compared it to Christopher Reeve.''
After three months, Griffin was given the OK to start driving again,
although he doesn't know whether he'll be able to go horseback riding. But
if Griffin can't ride Mini, he can still care for her. As he recovers,
Griffin dotes on the horse more than ever.
