A Natural Solution 4 You Newsletter
A LAST NOTE FROM DONNA
This will be the last issue of A Natural Solution 4 You that I will be creating. Randal will be taking over, and for those of you who have been with us for years, you know we've switched back and forth a number of times. I love variety and I've gotten a few too many publications to keep up with, so I will continue writing A Healing Moment and A Touch of Nature.
I'm getting involved with some volunteer time here in our community to benefit the wildlife, so I'm cutting my work hours and turning some of my duties over to others who work with and for our corporation. It's amazing how the online environment offers such a wide range of opportunities to use people's skills and talents and they don't have to be "parked" in our office space. We are blessed with wonderful and talented people.
If you're not on one of the mailing lists shown above, I hope you'll join me there to stay in touch. Each of our subscribers is very special to us. Being able to communicate with you makes me feel like I have a huge family out there in the virtual world.
I celebrated my 56th birthday on Sunday. Of course, I wanted to be near the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are blessed to be only 45 minutes away and the drive there is as exciting as getting there. We had a nice brunch at a place that had a pond and some great butterflies and flowers. You can view the photo album of my birthday at our site. If you have problems there, would you please take the time to make a comment at the bottom of this blog or reply to this if you receive it by email. We're troubleshoooting some site and server problems and would appreciate your input.
I took a walk about in our gardens here at Bluebird Cove yesterday morning. Things have grown so much since last year. I took lots of photos, so if you'd like to make a virtual visit to our place, you're welcome to drop by! :-)
Hugs and Blessings!

HEALTH NEWS AND TIPS
Eating Wild and Natural
Randal and I have been vegetarians for almost 30 years, but we realize there are people who will never give up their meat. So, the next best alternative is to at least provide information for meat-eaters to choose humane sourced meats, so they won't be buying factory-farmed products.
The Eat Wild website is the most comprehensive website on grass-based farming, providing information about the animal welfare, human health and environmental benefits of grass-fed husbandry. On this website you can also locate grass-based farmers by state from which to buy grassfed beef, veal, bison, poultry, pork, eggs and milk.
Select the "Shop for Meat, Eggs & Dairy" tab on the left side of the page, then your state, for a list of farmers in your area. Some farmers will ship products directly to your door, so look at neighboring states also. Visit Eat Wild now.
Back Pain?
Consumer Reports says that 4 out of 10 people with back pain said deep-tissue massage made them feel "much better." That's more relief than offered by prescription drugs.
Perhaps a massage lotion made from olive oil and some muscle relaxing essential oils would help to ease the pain away. Massage from loving hands can impart more than just the benefits of essential oils. The love of a wife or husband added to the lotion can impart some therapeutic value also.
Lavendar Essential Oil is only one thing mentioned in an article about back pain on the Mother Earth News site. There are a lot of articles there on natural alternatives for health problems.
The Meatrix and The Meatrix II
These animated films, a humorous spoof on the Matrix, take a look at the gap between our illusions of where food comes from and the reality of industrial food production. Find out more about healthy buying alternatives to meat and dairy products. Organic, pasture-fed food sources are now becoming more readily available. With the internet as a resource to locate your options, you have a chance to make sure your family makes the right food choices for health. View both films here.
You're Not Getting Enough Nutrients From the U.S. Depleted Soils
The USDA's recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables has risen from 3 to 9-11 servings per day. Why? Because our soils are dying. In 1992, the Earth Summit reported that North America's soils are 85% less potent than they were 100 years ago and that we lead the world in soil depletion.
Sick soil means sick people. Medicine Today Journal reports that spinach has 60% less iron than it did 50 years ago, broccoli and carrots have 75% less magnesium and watercress has 93% less copper.
Can excessive soil depletion be one reason we lead the world in degenerative diseases?
Congress finds that there is a link between the ingestion of food supplements and the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, osteoporosis and the Big C. The importance of nutrition and benefits of dietary supplementation to disease prevention has been documented n scientific studies.
Dr. Bernard, the doctor who performed the first open heart surgery, said that if he knew then what he knows now, instead of surgery he would have worked to prevent heart disease with food supplements and lifestyle changes in his patients.
There are more than 20,000 medical journal articles that promote the benefits and use of nutritional supplements. Hippocrates said to let food be your medicine and your medicine be food.
Read more about the importance of supplementation and choose a basic supplement plan for yourself and your family.

NUTRITION IS A CHOICE
The 10 Worst Foods to Eat & Healthy Alternatives
1. Quaker Oats & Honey Granola
Does Mother Nature want you eating half a cup of oats coated with three teaspoons of sugar and laden with more artery-clogging fat than you’d get in a McDonald’s hamburger? No doubt she’d prefer you eat low-fat, low-sugar, whole grain or bran cereals like Grape-Nuts, Wheaties, Kellogg’s All-Bran, Post 100% Bran, shredded wheat, oatmeal, or Wheatena. If you’re stuck on granola (and sugar), at least choose a product like Healthy Choice Low Fat Granola, Nature Valley Low Fat Fruit Granola, or Quaker 100% Natural Low Fat Granola with Raisins.
2. Bugles
What’s so bad about Bugles? The highly saturated coconut oil that General Mills fries them in —oil that’s about twice as saturated as lard. (Chips are usually fried in corn, soy, or canola oils.) One serving (just over a cup) of these fried wonders will give you 40% of your daily limit of saturated fat. If you’re looking for a low-fat snack, give Baked Bugles a shot, or try baked low-fat tortilla chips made by Tostitos or Guiltless Gourmet.
3. Buitoni Contandino Alfredo Sauce
Why not melt a third of a stick of butter on your pasta? You might as well if you fall for Contadina’s refrigerated Alfredo. On the other hand, you could choose Classico Spicy Red Pepper, Tomato & Basil, Fire-Roasted Tomato & Garlic, or any sauces from Healthy Choice or Ragú Light instead. All are lower in everything but taste.
4. Pizza Hut's Big New Yorker Pizza
Pizza Hut brags that The Big New Yorker plain cheese pizza weighs about three pounds before baking. But when it comes to pizza, bigger isn’t better. Even if you split this monster with three other people, your two slices will end up with almost a full day’s saturated fat (17 grams) and sodium (2,200 mg), and 790 calories. That’s without sausage, pepperoni, or anything else. Down an entire Healthy Choice Supreme French Bread Pizza, on the other hand, and you’ll get only 1.5 grams of saturated fat, 580 mg of sodium, and 330 calories.
5. Entennmann's Rich Frosted Donut
How can one doughnut have as much artery-clogging saturated and trans fat (10 grams) as nine strips of bacon? That’s what happens when you completely cover a doughnut in chocolate. Try Entenmann’s Light Donuts instead. With anywhere from six to nine grams of fat per doughnut (no more than three of them saturated), they’re not health foods. But if you’ve got to have a doughnut, they’re a lot better than the regular version.
6. Nissin Cup Noodles with Shrimp
What could be wrong with a cup of steaming-hot noodles? Well, because the noodles are pre-fried in artery-clogging palm oil, a serving of this soup looks like one-and-a-half cups of whole milk to your arteries. Try Fantastic Foods Chicken Free Ramen Noodles instead.
7. Burger King French Fries
Burger King makes some of the worst french fries you can buy at a fast-food restaurant. Thanks to the salty coating that allows more oil to be absorbed, a King Size order of their fries packs 590 calories and 30 grams of fat — 12 of them artery-clogging. That’s worse than McDonald’s Super Size Fries — and more than half the “bad” fat you should get in an entire day.
8. Campbell's red-and-white-label condensed Soup cans
They’re brimming with salt. Half a can averages more than 1,100 mg of sodium. That’s about half your ideal quota for an entire day. Try brands like Healthy Choice and Campbell’s Healthy Request, which have less than half as much sodium as Campbell’s regular soups. You can also check out lower-sodium dried soup cups by Fantastic Foods or Health Valley.
9. Frito Lay's Wow! Potato Chips
These chips, like Fat Free Pringles, are fried in Olean (olestra), the indigestible fat substitute. Olean doesn’t provide any calories, but in many people causes gastrointestinal symptoms — some people have said they suffered such severe cramps or diarrhea that they had to go to the emergency room. Olean also prevents the body’s absorption of carotenoids. These products won’t do much to help you lose weight or reduce your risk of heart attack, but might cause you a lot of misery. Instead buy baked potato or tortilla chips.
10. Denny's Grand Slam
This belt-buster breakfast (2 eggs, 2 sausage links, 2 strips of bacon, and 2 pancakes) may seem like a great deal to your wallet, but it’s no bargain for your waistline or arteries. It’ll sock you with three-quarters of a day’s total fat (50 grams) and saturated fat (14 grams), nearly a full day’s sodium (2,240 mg), and one-and-a-half day’s cholesterol (460 mg) — not to mention 800 calories. If you’re craving a hearty breakfast, try Denny’s Slim Slam instead. It slashes the calories to 600, the fat to 12 grams, the saturated fat to 3 grams, and the cholesterol to a mere 35 mg.

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE
Talking Dog
A guy is driving around Wadsworth, Ohio and he sees a sign in front of a house: "Talking Dog For Sale." He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard and sees a Labrador retriever sitting there. "You talk?" he asks.
"Yep," the Lab replies.
"So, what's your story?"
The Lab looks up and says, "Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running."
"But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."
The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.
"Ten dollars," the guy says.
"Ten dollars? This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheaply?"
"Because he's lying, he never did any of that stuff."
